The University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the world’s leading teaching and research institutions. As of 2015, UAB ranked 10th in the US among public universities in the amount of research support provided by the National Institutes of Health. As such, there are a wealth of research facilities available at UAB that support basic chemical and biochemical research. These core facilities offer state-of-the-art instruments, resources, and technologies for use by UAB researchers and students. Many of these facilities are located within the Chemistry Building, while some are located in other buildings on campus, just a short distance from the department.

The Department of Chemistry is housed in two buildings: the Chemistry Building and the Chemistry Annex. The Chemistry Building is a three-story, 45,000 square foot facility in the heart of the UAB campus. It is the main administrative, teaching, and research center for the Department. The main lecture hall and teaching laboratories for general chemistry, organic chemistry, and all upper division courses are housed in newly renovated space in this building. All faculty offices — as well as most faculty laboratories for organic, physical, inorganic, and biochemical research — are located in this facility. The Chemistry Annex houses research labs dedicated to organic synthesis, drug discovery, and polymeric nanomaterials, as well as class rooms dedicated to general and organic chemistry.
