Scholarship Opportunities

The Department of Physics has funding available for need-based and academic scholarships for each academic year. Please please make sure you read the requirements and guidelines for these scholarships before submitting an application.

UAB provides additional scholarship opportunities for entering freshmen and transfer students, both resident and non-resident.

Below is a listing of scholarships available to physics students specifically, and to students of the College of Arts & Sciences. For questions or more information please call (205) 934-4736. Please note that students interested in the God at the Speed of Light Scholarship, the Brockman Scholarship, and the Dean's Leadership Scholarship only need to fill out the College of Arts & Sciences-wide application form once. Applicants will be automatically considered for all College-wide scholarships in which they satisfy the eligibility requirements. Some physics specific scholarships have a separate application process (form) or require contact with the departmental office to obtain further details.


God at the Speed of Light Endowed Scholarships

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-granting program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer & Information Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Applicants should demonstrate academic promise and have earned at least a 2.5 grade point average in coursework completed prior to application. Preference will be given to applicants who are deserving of financial assistance. This is an annual award and recipients may apply for the award in subsequent years. Applicants must be residents of Alabama.

Deadline: February 15

Number and Amount: 1 Incoming Freshman, 1 Sophomore, 1 Junior, and 1 Senior Scholarship available; $1,250 annual award for each.

The Gladys Davies and George F. Brockman, IV Endowed Scholarship

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-granting program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer & Information Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Applicants should demonstrate academic promise and have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to application. This is an annual award. Recipients of the scholarship may not apply for the award in subsequent years.

Number and Amount: One $1,250 scholarship available annually.

Dean's Leadership Scholarships

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-granting program in the College of Arts & Sciences. Applicants should demonstrate leadership qualities and academic promise and have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to application. This is an annual award. Recipients of the scholarship may not apply for the award in subsequent years.

Number and Amount: One-to-four $1,250 scholarships available annually.

Students applying for the God at the Speed of Light Scholarship, the Brockman Scholarship, the Bauman Scholarship in Physics, the Warner Scholarship in Mathematics,and the Dean's Leadership Scholarship need only to complete the College of Arts & Sciences-wide Application Form once as they will be automatically considered for all scholarships in which they satisfy the eligibility requirements.

 

The Robert and Edith Bauman Endowed Endowed Scholarship in Physics

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or admitted to, a degree-granting program in the Department of Physics at UAB. Applicants should demonstrate academic promise and have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average in coursework completed prior to application. This is an annual award. Although preference will be given to entering first-year students,recipients of the scholarship may apply for the award in subsequent years.

Number and Amount: One-to-four $1,250 scholarships available annually.

Physics Faculty Scholarships

Requirements: Must be a major in the Department of Physics at UAB.

Application Deadline: April 15 and October 15

Number and Amount: Up to three $1,500 scholarships awarded per year.

NASA-Alabama Space Grant Program Scholarships

Requirements: Scholarships available to UAB science and engineering students through the NASA-Alabama Space Grant Program.  These scholarships may be renewed for one additional year on a competitive basis. Must be a U.S. citizen, undergraduate student (Jr./Sr. level), enrolled full-time in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 3.0 pursing any space-related field of study.  Awardees are required to submit a final report to the Consortium Program Office at the end of their award period.  

Application Deadline: March 1

Number and Amount: Six $1,000 scholarships per year available.
