Welcome to the UAB Department of Psychology! We are one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus, the home of three excellent graduate programs, and a center for cutting-edge research conducted by faculty and students working together. Let me introduce you:
We are Student-Centered
The Psychology Undergraduate Program offers valuable opportunities that are difficult to find elsewhere. Students can work directly with faculty, engage in hands-on research in our faculty laboratories, and participate in service projects in the community. Many of our courses are available online to offer more flexibility, and we also offer a fully online degree in psychology. We have an excellent Honors Program for qualified students who are interested in continuing their education in graduate school. The Undergraduate Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary program between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and our department.
Our graduate program has three concentrations — Medical/Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Behavioral Neuroscience — and we also offer a certificate program in Social and Behavioral Statistics. Our graduate students work directly with faculty on cutting-edge research and have many opportunities for training in a variety of research, teaching, and clinical assistantships.
We are Research Focused
Our department has a long history of being nationally ranked by the National Science Foundation in federally funded Research & Development expenditures, and is home to several of UAB’s research centers, established research programs, laboratories, teaching and training sites, occupying over 40,000 square feet of facility space across UAB’s campus. We are Collaborative
Psychology is a highly interdisciplinary endeavor and this is reflected in the diversity of our faculty laboratories’ collaborations with a large number of departments and entities across campus, including the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, School of Public Health, Children’s Hospital, and the Civitan International Research Center. In this environment, students are given a wide diversity of intellectual perspectives, spanning from basic science to social science, which will provide them with a solid and broad foundation from which to build their career.
