UAB’s Faculty Profiles System provides a single location for faculty to store their professional information – publications, grants, teaching and professional activities. The system can be used to make research and professional activities visible in order to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations, identify colleagues with specific areas of expertise for consultation, and facilitate consistent faculty activities reporting.

As of February 2016, we have completed training with faculty in the Schools of Health Professions, Engineering, Education, Dentistry, Optometry, and the Libraries. Training is underway or planned for the School of Public Health and several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. The team is currently in the process of developing individual and departmental reporting functions.

Oversight of the project has been provided by the UAB Faculty Activities Committee, which began meeting in the spring of 2014. The committee has representatives from all schools/college/libraries and provides direction for the implementation of the Faculty Profiles System and communication with members of the UAB faculty.

UAB’s Faculty Profiles System is built on Symplectic Elements. Other U.S. institutions using Symplectic include Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, University of Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Cornell University.
