IDEA Next Gen:  Campus Labs Course Evaluation

This fall UAB will launch the new and improved IDEA Platform hosted by Campus Labs Course Evaluation.  UAB started using IDEA in 2007.  Technology has advanced significantly since then so IDEA has merged with Campus Labs to create a new improved user experience!

What does this mean to faculty?

  • You have your own, personalized faculty dashboard with all your courses for the term with a single login using your UAB Credentials.
  • The faculty dashboard will include your end of term reports which are viewable within 7 days after grades are posted.
  • Faculty Information Form (FIF) is now called the Objectives Selection Form (OSF). The OSF has 13 objectives (FIF had 12) and the wording of some objectives has been updated.
  • You select the objectives for your courses and add additional questions (unless disabled by your department administrator) on your faculty dashboard, no more filtering through multiple emails and links to find your forms!
  • You can see your class response rates in real time during the response period!
  • If you choose, you can have students complete their course evaluations in-person during class time, as the student interface is now mobile friendly. (smartphones, iPads, laptops)
  • Faculty Dashboard access:  https://uab.campuslabs.com/faculty
  • Click here for downloadable, detailed instructions for the Faculty Dashboard (PDF)
  • See the "Resources" section at the bottom of this page for additional information.

What does this mean for IDEA/Course Evaluation administrators?

  • No more making selections in BlazerNet then working on another site, it is all completed in one place!
  • Administration (Course) set-up, additional questions, and reporting occur in your own private administrator dashboard.
  • No more ordering reports and dealing with paper and distributions. All reports will be available online within 7 days after grades post for the term.
  • You can now control the mailings and reminders to students and faculty!
  • School Coordinators/ Department Chairpersons will have 14 days to set up their administrations for the term. Training (group and personalized) and manual will be available to all administrators prior to the roll out this fall. Administrations for the fall will be complete at the end of the training session.
  • Faculty Information Form (FIF) is now called the Objectives Selection Form (OSF). The OSF has 13 objectives (FIF had 12) and the wording of some objectives has been updated.
  • Faculty will have from the time your administration is live until the last day of student evaluation to fill out their OSF’s
  • There are three IDEA forms that administrators can choose between:
    • Diagnostic Feedback - 40 questions - A comprehensive tool that provides both summative and formative feedback about student progress on relevant course objectives, instructor teaching methods, and overall impressions of the instructor and course.
    • Learning Essentials - 18 questions – (Formerly Short Form) Provides summative feedback about average student progress on relevant learning objectives and overall impressions of the instructor and course.
    • Teaching Essentials - 12 questions – (NEW- NOT BEING IMPLEMENTED UNTIL 2018) Provides formative feedback about teaching methods highly correlated with instructor and course excellence. (Faculty will not complete the OSF when using the Teaching Essentials instrument)
  • Students have 7-14 days to complete the course evaluations which close on the last day of class.
  • Administrator Dashboard access: https://uab.campuslabs.com/ce
