General Eligibility Requirements

Mr and Ms UAB1. Applicants/winner must be enrolled at UAB as an undergraduate student during the Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 terms following their selection so as to fulfill their obligation as Mr. or Ms. UAB. The $2,500 award will not be applied to the winners’ accounts until Spring 2024-Fall 2024 -no exceptions. Half the award will be disbursed in the spring with the remaining portion being disbursed the following fall. 1st alternates will each be awarded $1,000 scholarship that will also be disbursed in two payments; half for Spring 2024 and half for Fall 2024.

2. Applicants should demonstrate a record of leadership and active participation in extracurricular activities such as: student government association, service or special interest organizations, fraternities or sororities, publications, honorary societies, religious organizations, athletics, university committees, or the creative and performing arts. One need not be involved in all of the above, but there must be some indication of overall leadership ability and exceptional performance in one or more areas.

3. Community activities are also considered by the Selection Committee when evaluating extracurricular participation, although, university related activities are accorded primary importance.

4. GPA of 2.5 is required.

5. Part-time as well as full-time students are eligible.

6. ONLY undergraduate students are eligible.

General Instructions

ALL applicants will need to attend a brief orientation to explain the process for selections and responsibilities of the recipients. You may choose to attend one of the five sessions that are available. It is NOT necessary to attend more than one. The orientation sessions will be held on the following dates:

Do not duplicate entries on the application. Please complete this application in its entirety. It is very important that you put all activities from your “collegiate” years. Also make sure to put each office held. If the application is incomplete you will automatically be disqualified. If the nature of the organization is not clear, give the full name and a brief description. Indicate positions and dates held for all activities (member, president, chairperson, etc.). Please list the president or chairman's name with day and evening phone numbers beside each activity. (If you are the president or chairman, list your advisor's name and phone numbers.) You must also provide one reference paragraph from any UAB faculty or staff member. (Must be on UAB letterhead-please include email and phone number and limit to 200 words or less.)

Applications are due Sunday, October 15, 2023, by midnight. An evaluation of each application will take place once all applications are received. Applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified via email/online on Monday, October 16, 2023 by noon. All applicants will be notified of their status electronically. Once the list is posted, candidates will be required to call the Alumni Affairs Office (205-934-3555) to schedule their first round interview times.

First round interviews will be held Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from 1:00pm until 8:00pm with the top 5 men and top 5 women applicants advancing to the final round of interviews. Interviews will take place at the UAB National Alumni Society House. The top 10 will be notified on Friday, October 20, 2023 by noon via email/online. Candidates will need to call the Alumni Affairs Office (205-934-3555) as soon as possible to schedule a time for final round interviews.

Final interviews for the top 10 finalists will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Interviews will take place at the UAB National Alumni Society House. A mandatory practice will be held for the top 10 finalists on Friday, November 3 as well as participation in the parade at noon on Friday, November 3. All finalists are required to be available at Football Game on Saturday, November 4.

The top 10 finalists will be voted upon by the UAB student body. Standard USGA campaign policies and procedures will apply. All candidates will be expected to comply with campaign guidelines in order to participate in the Mr. & Ms. UAB competition.

Applications will NOT be accepted after the deadline date and the time of Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 11.59pm.



ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF MR. & MS. UAB MAY INCLUDE:

  • Acting as an ex-officio student representative on the National Alumni Society Board of Directors when called upon.
  • Acting as an official representative of the UAB student body when called upon.
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the UAB National Alumni Society and the UAB Student Alumni Society to the undergraduate student population.
  • Active participation in the Student Alumni Society as the Presidents (Mr. & Ms. UAB) and Vice Presidents (Mr. and Ms. UAB 1st Alternates).
  • Lead the Student Alumni Representatives, plan events, and promote the Student Alumni Society on campus.
  • Assisting with the Alumni Admission Program and other programs of the Office of Undergraduate Admission when called upon.
  • Assisting with any programs in the area of Student Activities when called upon.
  • Assisting with the publicity and selection process of the next Mr. & Ms. UAB.
  • Participating in UAB Homecoming ceremonies the following year.
  • Mr. and Ms. UAB recipients will serve a minimum 16 volunteer office hours per semester at the Alumni House and Mr. and Ms. UAB 1st Alternates will serve a minimum 8 volunteer office hours per semester.
