Welcome to the web site of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alabama at Birmingham. The mission of the Ophthalmology Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is to increase the clinical research capability at UAB in the area of eye disease and vision impairment so that UAB investigators can develop high quality research programs and enhance existing ones. The CRU meets this goal by providing core resources and consultation to investigators in the areas of study design and implementation, project coordination, database design and management, biostatistical analysis, grantsmanship, and grants management. These resources are made possible through grants from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health and the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama. The CRU also consists of the research programs of three faculty members in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology whose activities are devoted to patient-oriented research on eye diseases and vision impairment. These faculty are Drs. Laura Dreer, Gerald McGwin, and Cynthia Owsley. Dr. Owsley is the Director of the CRU and Dr. McGwin is Associate Director for Biostatistical and Epidemiological Services.
