The UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine is home to highly-trained faculty and staff who provide clinical, educational and research activities in Family Medicine for the entire UAB community.
The Department was founded in 1975 and its educational mission continues through its work with medical students in all four years of medical school. Family Practice Residency Training takes place in Selma and Huntsville, and UAB coordinates with the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, who sponsors Family Practice Residency Training there as well. Clinical services are available for all ages in the Family Medicine Faculty Clinic and for all UAB students in the Student Health Services Division. These facilities are located on-campus just a few blocks from the University Hospital and the Kirklin Clinic.
The Department is home to the Alabama Practice-Based Research Network, the only such network in the state. The APBRN coordinates practice-based research on a local, regional and national scale. UASOM was ranked #10 nationally in primary care in 2011 and the department is proud to be a strong contributor to the primary care mission of the University.
