Department of Family and Community Medicine launches Faculty Development Fellowship program

Written by

The UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine—in partnership with the UAB Center for Teaching and Learning and the UAB Center for Clinical Translational Science—has established a Faculty Development Fellowship program.

The yearlong program aims to prepare family medicine physicians for a career in medical education through the acquisition of skills in active teaching, scholarship and leadership development. Trainees will undergo extensive and in-depth training with nationally and internationally recognized experts in family medicine, clinical education, research methods, leadership development and team science.

“We are excited to launch the UAB Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship, which is the first of its kind in Alabama,” said Irfan Asif, M.D., chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. “The program welcomes fellows from Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Mobile. Alabama is in desperate need for more primary care physicians. In order to train the next generation of physicians to meet this need, we must have the teachers and mentors who can adequately provide the educational foundation for our learners. Fellows from this program will excel in medical education and be prepared to develop leaders in family medicine.”

Seventeen individuals will complete the training in the first cycle of the fellowship.
