UAB School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Campus hosts fourth annual Research Day

The UAB School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Campus recently hosted its fourth annual Research Day on May 18. Roger D. Smalligan, M.D., MPH, professor and regional dean of the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, and Farrah Ibrahim, M.D., FACP, director of the Huntsville Internal Medicine Residency Program, developed the oral and poster competition in 2018.Smalligan and winners

Huntsville campus students, residents, and faculty presented 62 posters and 10 oral presentations. Smalligan presided over the presentations and UAB Huntsville faculty participated in the judging of abstracts, posters, and oral presentations at the event.

“This was a record year, “We had 72 peer-reviewed and ranked abstracts submitted, and many covered interesting and timely topics,” Smalligan said. “I thought the oral presentations were uniformly excellent this year, and I appreciate all the time and effort our students, residents and faculty put into their preparation.”

Winners of the Research Day competition are listed below. The ranks of students and residents are correct at the time of the Research Day awards. 

Clinical Oral Presentations (Student/Resident)

1st Place— Bethany Kennedy, MS3; Rahul Gaini, MS3; and Janaki Nimmagadda, M.D., associate professor of Pediatrics, for “Neuropsychological Associations of Turner Syndrome.”

2nd Place— Chandler Stisher, M.D., PGY-2; Tim Littmann, M.D.,PGY-2, and I. Alex Pope, M.D., assistant professor of Family Medicine, for “A Case of Misplaced Pupils.”

Research Oral Presentations (student/resident)

1st Place— Elizabeth Olson, MS3; Kanupriya Gupta, Ph.D., scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases; Barbara Van Der Pol, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases; James W. Galbraith, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine; and William M. Geisler, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases; for “Mycoplasma genitalium as an Etiology of Dysuria in Women: A Literature Review and Pilot Study.”

2nd Place— Qurrat-ul-ain Aziz, M.D., PGY-2; Dhivya Velu, M.D., PGY-2; Taylor Steuber, PharmD, associate professor of Internal Medicine (Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy); Farrah Ibrahim, M.D.,, professor of Internal Medicine; and Abdul Hritani, M.D., clinical assistant professor in Internal Medicine; for “A 20-Year-Single Community-Based Tertiary Care Center’s Experience with Atrial Myxomas.”

Clinical Posters

1st Place— Kelly Chen, MS3; Parekha Yedla, M.D. associate professor of Internal Medicine; and Kaushik Jain, M.D., clinical assistant professor in Internal Medicine, for “Systemic ATTR Amyloidosis with Cardiac Involvement as a Cause of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.” 

2nd Place— S. Sikandar Raza, MS3, Mariam Riad, M.D., PGY-2; and Abdulwahab Hritani, M.D., clinical assistant professor in Internal Medicine, for “Torrential Tricuspid Valve Regurgitation in Heart Failure Patients with Preserved Ejection Fraction.”

3rd Place— Fahad Alkaabba, M.D., PGY-1; Maha Al-Baghdadi, M.D., PGY-2; and Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, professor and dean, Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, for “An Ambiguous Presentation of Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency.” 

Research Posters

1st Place— Sindhu Lakkur, MS4; Jordan Gallardo, MS3; Eman Alshaikh, M.D., PGY-2; Farrah Ibrahim, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine; and Ali Hassoun, M.D., clinical associate professor of Internal Medicine, for “A Retrospective Chart Review of Convalescent Plasma Therapy in Covid-19 Patients.”

2nd Place— Niambi Horton, D.O., PGY2; and Farrah Ibrahim, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine, for “Incorporating Implicit Bias (IB) Training into Internal Medicine Residency Education (IMRE).”

3rd Place— Adam Bashir, MS3, and Harrison Walker, M.D., professor in the Department of Neurology, for “Functional Connectivity Between Cerebral Cortex and GPE:  Parallel Investigations from Mouse Connectome and Humans During DBS Surgery.”
