Since its initial formation in 1937, the UAB Pediatric Residency Training program has trained hundreds of pediatricians who now care for the children of the state of Alabama, the nation and the world. The current resident class consists of 18 residents per year. Since 1993, UAB has also offered combined training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds). Four residents per year are accepted into the Med-Peds program. Both programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Beginning in 2007 a Combined Training Program in Medical Genetics and Pediatrics is also available. An opportunity also exists for one resident per year to participate in our Child Neurology residency training program.
The UAB pediatrics and med-peds residency programs have welcomed medical students from more than 30 states and several foreign countries.
UAB graduates are leaders in their fields. Department chairs, residency program directors, division directors, biomedical researchers, NIH Study Section Chairs, journal editors, a past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics and countless community pediatric leaders got their start in the UAB residency program.
In the last 10 years, exactly 50% of UAB graduates have entered general pediatric settings while 50% have entered subspecialty practice.
