Biography

Dr. Kolettis is Professor of Urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He joined the faculty in July of 1998 and has served as the Urology Residency Program Director since July 2003. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame. He then received his MD degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Kolettis completed his Urology Residency and Fellowship in Male Infertility at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of male infertility, including vasectomy reversal. Dr. Kolettis has performed over 800 microsurgical procedures including vasectomy reversals, varicocele ligations, and sperm retrievals. He has been recognized by his peers and invited to give presentations on male infertility and vasectomy reversal at national and international meetings. 

Dr. Kolettis is author or co-author of many publications and serves as a reviewer for Fertility and Sterility, Journal of Andrology, the Journal of Urology and Urology. Dr. Kolettis has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction and is the past president of this organization. He has also previously been elected to the Board of Directors of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology and to the Executive Council of the American Society of Andrology, organizations dedicated to the study of male infertility. He is also a member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons and the American Urological Association. Dr. Kolettis currently serves on the American Urological Association Male Infertility Best Practice Policy Update Panel, a group that formulates recommendations on the evaluation and treatment of Male Infertility. As part of this group, he has participated in formulating guidelines for evaluation and treatment of azoospermia, varicocele, and infertility after vasectomy. Dr. Kolettis works with a specialized team of gynecologists, nurses, and specialized laboratory personnel to provide comprehensive care for couples with infertility. Dr. Kolettis is also part of a multidisciplinary team that provides fertility preservation services. These services, including sperm cryopreservation (freezing) and sperm retrieval are offered prior to cancer treatment or other kinds of treatment that can affect a man's fertility.
