New Radiation Oncology Facility

Construction is underway on the New Radiation Oncology Facility. This 50,000 square-foot, two-story structure will replace the 31-year-old Wallace Tumor Institute building.

The $22.5 million dollar facility will be connected by overhead walkways to the UAB Hospital and will house UAB's Department of Radiation Oncology. W. Cobb Hazelrig donated $5 million dollars, one of UAB's largest individual gifts, to help build the Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Facility. The building's name honors Hazelrig's parents, J. William and Virginia, and their long time friends, Paul and Merle Salter, both Birmingham physicians.

More than 30,000 patient visits are made to the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology each year from across the Southeast. Department Chair, James A. Bonner, MD, says the new facility will provide a more suitable, larger space for newer technology and will set the standard for the future of the field.

The new facility will emphasize patient-comfort. This building will provide separate waiting areas for children and adults. Patient rooms and treatment facilities will feature warm and inviting spaces that provide a healing environment for both patients and staff. A park will also be open adjacent to the new building that will provide a fountain, benches, and green space for patients and families to enjoy.
