About RMWP

The Red Mountain Writing Project (RMWP) is a local affiliate of the National Writing Project, whose motto is “teachers teaching teachers” and whose mission is to provide a forum for teachers of all grade levels and in all content areas to study and develop new and innovative strategies for literacy instruction.  The National Writing Project provides grant money to over two-hundred sites across the United States, touching the lives of thousands of teachers and tens-of-thousands of students every year.

The RMWP, which began in 2004, has had a direct impact on over 100 teachers from North-Central Alabama through its annual Invitational Summer Institute, and those teachers (now called “fellows” of RMWP) have created and implemented new professional development opportunities for hundreds more teachers in their service areas.

2014 21st Century Literacies Conference

Nonfiction is anchored in daily life and can be integrated in all areas of learning. This is a growing trend in 21st century classrooms and is a major component of the College and Career-Ready Standards. Kylene Beers writes in Notice and Note: “We want [students] inside the text, noticing everything, questioning everything, weighing everything they are reading against their lives, the lives of others, and the world around them.” This conference is an opportunity for educators along with Kylene Beers, Bob Probst, and Sue Wilder to demonstrate the teaching of nonfiction across all content areas.
