2014 Summer Writing Camps
Middle School Camp:
Times: 7:30 drop-off and 3:00 pick-up
After school care will be provided on a contractual basis with college students. Costs vary from $5 to $10 hourly per child. All children must be picked by by 6 p.m.

Week One: Making Mystery (May 27-May 30, 2014)--$150
Begin your summer with an opportunity to craft your own mystery! Learn to build suspense, a key element in mysteries. Develop your style as you describe characters, especially the suspects. You'll learn to create the mood and set the scene that gives mysteries a unique feel. Hook your reader using effective dialogue and thought shots. Discover the art of story structure as you write the climax and resolution of your story. Watch your mystery unfold in a Photo Story presentation that plays to an audience of peer and guests at week's end.
Week Two: Staking your Claim (June 2-June 6, 2014)--$165
This week is your opportunity to voice your opinion on a topic of your choosing. You will state your claim, provide warrants as well as rebuttals. Skills learned will help in your school work with the increasing emphasis on nonfiction and argument writing. You can sharpen your skills and/or get a jump on next year's literacy cirrculum and critical thinking exercises.
Week Three: Traveling the World (June 9-June 13, 2014)--$165
You will immerse yourself in a culture unlike your own. You will spend time researching as well as interviewing people of a country of your choosing, getting a sense of life from a different perspective. Customs, food, geography, religion, and history are just a tip of the iceberg as you become a global ambassador for your chosen nation.
Week Four: Making a Difference (June 16-June 20, 2014)--$165
Using science, technology, engineering, and math, you will create a product or service that will improve the quality of life of your people who are physically challenged. This is a great opportunity to empower your written word and tap into your creativity. With the increased focus on nonfiction writing in schools, you will learn and apply skills that will easily transfer to your academics next year.
