2022 in review: A banner Blazer year

Programs across the university, from athletics to academics to patient care and more, were recognized on the national and international level in 2022, highlighting UAB’s continued commitment to excellence and achievement as outlined in Forging the Future, UAB’s strategic plan.

C Usa Champs

In March, UAB Men’s Basketball cinched the sixth C-USA tournament title victory in program history, and the first since the Blazers cut down the nets in Birmingham back in 2015, with an 82-73 win over Louisiana Tech. MARIO TERRANA

Fall Campus

A number of UAB programs were highly ranked in the 2023 U.S. News Best Graduate School Rankings. The master's in health administration continues to be ranked No. 1 nationally, and other graduate and professional programs are strongly competitive in the 2023 list.

Japanese Maple Asc 3   Widget

For the eighth year, UAB was recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Campus USA for its work to nurture more than 4,400 healthy trees and engage students and employees in conservation. An example of UAB's commitment to preserving its urban forest, dollars from the Lynne and Tim Sullivan Tree Fund were used to plant new and maintain existing trees on campus and relocate two 50-year-old legacy Japanese maples to new homes on campus.

For just the third time in UAB history, a faculty member was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, whose members provide independent, objective counsel to the nation on matters related to science and technology. Casey Weaver, M.D., a professor in the Department of Pathology, was among 120 new members and 30 international members invited this year.

Uab Hospital

UAB Hospital was again named best in Alabama, and in addition to taking top honors for the state according to 2022-23 rankings from U.S. News & World Report, eight of UAB Hospital's adult specialties are ranked among the best in the nation. The Best Hospitals specialty rankings assess hospital performance in 15 specialties or specialty areas, and rankings are determined by a combination of extensive data-driven analysis and expert opinion.

Campus Green

UAB rose 11 spots in U.S. News “Best College” rankings for its continued growth, commitment to diversity and academic excellence. Programs in the schools of Nursing, Business and Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences also were well-ranked.

Neurosurgery

UAB Medicine was listed among ”Most Wired” hospitals for 2022 — the list from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives acknowledges health care organizations that have adopted and deployed information technology to improve patient safety and health outcomes across the industry.

Gilman Scholars

UAB was recognized as a top producer of Gilman Scholars by U.S. Department of State. The university was named one of the top three U.S. colleges and universities with an undergraduate population of 5,000-15,000 in number of students sent abroad through the Gilman International Scholarship Program during 2020-2021; the GIlman program expands access and equity in study abroad and international internship opportunities among U.S. undergrads with high financial need.

Diversity Champ

For the fifth consecutive year, UAB was named a Diversity Champion — one of only 16 colleges and universities in the U.S. — and earned the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine. Paulette Dilworth, Ph.D., vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UAB, also joins the INSIGHT editorial board.

Marie-Carmelle Elie, M.D., chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine; James Markert, M.D., chair of the Department of Neurosurgery; and Alan Tita, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and associate dean for Global and Women’s Health, joined 13 current or former UAB faculty members who have been honored during their careers with selection to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a physician or scientist in the U.S.

Research Tops 715mill

UAB received more than $715 million in research grants and extramural awards for the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2022, up $67.8 million from the previous year. That figure represents a 10.5% increase for the year and a nearly 50% increase — an additional $237 million — during the past five years.

Uab Online

UAB was listed among the top 7.5% of best online schools in U.S. by Newsweek — and also is the highest-ranked Alabama university on the list. UAB Online also received a best five-star ranking on the list, awarded to institutions with an aggregate score value that exceeds the median score of all named institutions.

Bahamas Bowl Champions   Widget

UAB’s victory over Miami (OH) on Dec. 16 during the 2022 Bahamas Bowl was its 50th win since returning to action in 2017. The winningest team in Conference USA during that span, the Blazers are 50-26 overall since 2017.
