App lets you request a safety escort ride

An enhanced mobile application will enable students and employees to request a safety escort ride without having to make a phone call or leave their place of safety.

What else can you do to stay safe?

Download and use the free RAVE Guardian safety app, call for on-campus safety escorts and use Blazer Express, take advantage of UABPD education and safety programs and update your B-Alert emergency notification profile when your address or numbers change.

UAB provides late-night, on-demand van service 9 p.m.-5:30 a.m. every day through its Blazer Express Safety Escort to UAB students and employees who request a ride by calling 205-934-8772. Beginning March 1, passengers can request an escort ride using the TransLoc on-demand application.

“UAB has been using the Transloc GPS bus tracking app to give BlazerExpress passengers a simple tool that enables them to follow the buses on their routes in real time,” said André Davis, director of Parking & Transportation Services. “Now they will be able to use the application for late-night, on-demand transportation as well.”

“Riders can request a pick-up, see the vehicle in real time and get notifications when the vehicle is approaching — all while waiting in a safe place,” Davis said.

Users who already have the TransLoc Rider app on their phone will not have to install a new application. Those who need it can download the app for Android or iPhone Android or iPhone — and select UAB from the menu to access custom services.

UAB continues to implement and build on safety initiatives recommended by the 2015 Safety Task Force and employs many safety and security measures to safeguard students, employees, patients and visitors.

“We encourage all students, employees and visitors to take full advantage of the security resources UAB provides,” Davis said.
