Discover ways that technologies can improve the learning experience during a campus conference hosted by UAB eLearning and Professional Studies and Canvas March 30-31.
Fellow faculty will talk about ways technologies and media enhance online and traditional courses in midday panel discussions, and you can explore hands-on training in morning and afternoon sessions specially designed for new and experienced users.
Registration for the Grow with Canvas event is not required, but it is encouraged to ensure resources are available for all participants.
Panel sessions
During the panel sessions, faculty will share new ideas and results from their own courses and answer questions and offer suggestions about incorporating the ideas into other courses. The sessions will be held 1-2:15 p.m. both days in Center for Teaching & Learning Room 241C in the School of Education Building.
- March 30 – Bridgett Hill Kennedy, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, is the moderator for the session that includes panelists Scott Brande, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry; Donald Burke, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Betty Nelson, Ph.D., associate professor of curriculum instruction; and Nancy Wingo, Ph.D., instructor, School o Nursing.
- March 31 – Elizabeth Fisher, Ph.D., interim executive director of eLearning and Professional Studies, is the moderator for the session that includes panelists Nancy Borkowski, DBA, professor in health services administration; Dale Dickinson, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health; John Hansen, Ph.D., associate professor of marketing; and Jason Linville, Ph.D., assistant professor of justice sciences.
Training sessions
| A Canvas Help Center is always available provide easy-to-find help resources for Canvas and other academic technologies, including a faculty toolkit for developing online courses. Three training tracks will be available, and each one will be held 9-11 a.m. and 2:45-4:30 p.m. both days; the beginner and intermediate sessions will be in the Center for Teaching & Learning in the School of Education Building. Choose one track or take all three:
- Beginners: Learn about the dynamic syllabus and other basic tasks. During this training session in CTL Room 243, staff will provide one-on-one assistance to help you set up a course syllabus in Canvas.
- Intermediate users: Explore tools for assignments and grading in CTL Room 241C. Bring your course materials and learn to use the quizzes, grade books and other tools.
- Advanced users: Take courses to the next level by incorporating interactive media, engagement tools and other advanced technologies. The March 30 session is in Sterne Library Room 163, and the March 31 session is in Sterne Library Room 174.
