Weekly Grants and Contracts Awarded Report
Posted by | 04/16/18 If funded, the proposed start date of the CCVC Innovations in Cardiovascular Discovery Grant will be October 1, 2018. It is anticipated that 1 pilot project with a budget not exceeding a total of $50,000 (including matching funds) will be awarded based on merit and availability of funds. At the one-year review, if the Steering Committee agrees there is substantial progress on the project, up to an additional $12,500 may be awarded for a second year. If an R01 or equivalent grant is funded from the project within three years, an additional $12,500 may also be given. Awardees will be required to provide a six-month interim presentation to the committee on project progress as well as a one-year report on accomplishments.
ELIGIBILITY and EXPECTATIONS
- Open to all UAB faculty members at any rank. CCVC Steering Committee members are excluded from applying as PI, but may serve as Co-Investigators.
- Projects can be clinical, population, basic science, or a combination. This RFA is specifically soliciting novel, innovative, and high-impact science.
- Preference will be given to multi-investigator proposals.
- Applications that are extensions of currently funded research will not be considered.
- Require IACUC/IRB protocol submission prior to the funding start date (if applicable).
- The selected pilot project is expected to lead to the submission of an extramural NIH grant application.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
- A one page pre-proposal should be submitted by May 31, 2018 5pm (CT) and should include: title of proposal; names of the PI and applicants; a brief statement of the problem, statement of the hypothesis to be tested, why it is innovative and impactful, and how you will test it. No data or references required. NIH bio-sketch of the principal investigator(s) should also be submitted.
- PIs of the most meritorious pre-proposals will be notified by June 20, 2018. Finalists will then be required to submit a three-page proposal (11-point font, 0.5-inch margins, not including face page, references, plan for extramural funding, and budget/budget justification) by July 31st and give a 10-minute presentation to the CCVC review panel on August 14, 2018 at noon. The full paper and presentation must include, in the following order:
- Face page with grant title and listing of all investigators and their UAB Departments/Divisions
- Desired modifications to the initial one-page pre-proposal
- A detailed description of the approach (up to two pages)
- References
- Timeline for proposed studies and plan for extramural funding
- Biosketches of all investigators (PI and Co-Investigators)
- Budget and justification, including description of management of the project, along with the source and extent of any matching funds and other available resources.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Applications must be submitted electronically in a single PDF to Megan Pickering (meganpickering@uabmc.edu) by 5:00pm CT on May 31, 2018 (pre-proposal) and July 31st (finalist papers). Applications must use Arial 11-point font with 0.5 inch margins. Faculty salary, travel or publication costs are not to be included. Post Doc/Technician salary/fringe of 25% or less of the budget will be considered. Applications that are not formatted as described will not be reviewed.

October 1, 2018: Funding start date Posted by | 04/13/18 The UAB Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center (CCVC) is pleased to announce this RFA to fund one pilot project that focuses on an innovative, high-impact scientific idea in the context of cardiovascular disease research, which is anticipated to be paradigm shifting. This grant is modeled after the American Heart Association’s Innovative Project Award. The successful recipient will initially be awarded $25,000 from the CCVC, but is expected to obtain matching funds from another UAB entity (Division/Department/School/Center). Matching fund commitments should only be secured by those advancing as finalists.
Projects must be novel, unexplored ideas, focusing on new paradigms and new perspectives to change current thinking about cardiovascular disease. Projects without firm data, but strong scientific rationale, innovation, and approach are highly encouraged.

The Department of Defense (DoD) recently released Fiscal Year 2018 (FY18) funding opportunities for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program (ALSRP) and Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) being managed by the office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program
Therapeutic Idea Award
Therapeutic Development Award
Ovarian Cancer Research Program
Clinical Development Award
Omics Consortium Development Award
Investigator-Initiated Research Award
Ovarian Cancer Academy Award – Early Career Investigator
Pilot Award
Detailed descriptions of the funding opportunity, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the Program Announcements. The Program Announcements are available electronically for downloading from the Grants.gov website (http://www.grants.gov), the CDMRP website (http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/prgdefault.shtml) and the electronic Biomedical Research Application Portal (eBRAP) (https://eBRAP.org).
All CDMRP funding opportunities, both recently and previously released, are available on the CDMRP website (http://cdmrp.army.mil).
Subsequent notifications will be sent when additional funding opportunities are released. A listing of all open CDMRP funding opportunities can be obtained on the Grants.gov website by performing a basic search using CFDA Number 12.420.
Submission is a two-step process requiring both pre-application submission and full application submission. All pre-applications must be submitted through eBRAP (https://eBRAP.org/). Full applications from extramural organizations (non-DoD organizations) must be submitted through Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov/). Intramural DoD organizations may submit full applications to either eBRAP or Grants.gov. Refer to the General Application Instructions, Section II.A. for registration and submission requirements for eBRAP and Grants.gov. For detailed information on the submission process, refer to Section II.D. of the Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity.
eBRAP is a multifunctional web-based system that allows PIs to submit their pre-applications electronically through a secure connection, to view and edit the content of their pre-applications and full applications, to receive communications from the CDMRP, and to submit documentation during award negotiations and period of performance. A key feature of eBRAP is the ability of an organization’s representatives and PIs to view and modify the Grants.gov application submissions associated with them. eBRAP will validate Grants.gov application files against the specific Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity requirements and discrepancies will be noted in an email to the PI and in the Full Application Files tab in eBRAP. It is the applicant’s responsibility to review all application components for accuracy as well as ensure proper ordering as specified in this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity.
