IRB-Approved Training Alternatives (Initial)

IRB-Approved Training Alternatives (Initial)

New to UAB?
New faculty members or researchers may begin or continue their research if they provide certification of completing the CITI course-or another training course accepted by the institution as meeting the federal IRB training requirements-while affiliated with an institution that holds a Federalwide Assurance (FWA).

Persons submitting certification of a training course other than the CITI course should also submit a description of the course (e.g., syllabus, course objectives and outline).

Depending on the date when the "transferred" training was completed, continuing IRB training may also be required. As of 2009-2010, continuing IRB training is required at least once every other calendar year (i.e., Jan.-Dec.).

To receive IRB training credit at UAB, you must submit two items to the UAB OIRB by fax (934-1301) or scan-and-email to Lee Griner (lgriner@uab.edu):

VA Employee?
For IRB training credit, provide the OIRB with

  • A completed and signed Verification of Training Completion
    and
  • For Initial IRB Training, your CITI Completion Certificate showing completion of the Basic CITI Course in the Protection of Human Subjects.

Working with non-UAB Researchers Outside the USA?
This training is not accepted for UAB students or employees or for persons who live in the USA.

Researchers who do not live in the USA and are not employed by UAB, initial IRB training may be completed through either one of two training curricula produced by Family Health International: "Research Ethics Training Curriculum" and "Research Ethics Training Curriculum for Community Representatives." These curricula are available at the FHI web site (link current in December 2006).

IRB training credit at UAB can be granted after the OIRB receives either

  1. Hard copy: a copy of the researcher's FHI completion certificate and a researcher-signed copy of the UAB Verification of Training Completion or
  2. Electronic copy: an e-mail message sent from the international researcher directly to the UAB IRB that includes both the FHI completion certificate (attached or forwarded) and all contact information from the Verification of Training Completion.
