  Dr. Bertrand joined the UAB faculty in 2014 in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, where he provides instruction in the Biomedical Science Program and the Clinical Laboratory Science Program. He also has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, where he studies the role of Notch-1 signaling in regulating nutrient responses of tumor cells in the microenvironment of epithelial and hematopoietic malignacies. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Biology from The Georgia Institute of Technology (1990), Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1995) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bertrand has mentored graduate and undergraduate students conducting research in cell signaling, cancer biology and B-cell development.

Tera Webb received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and her Master of Science Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from UAB. Prior to joining the School of Health Professions in 2013, she worked in clinical practice as a Medical Laboratory Scientist as a Clinical Microbiologist.

Ms. Webb teaches the Clinical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Chemistry laboratories for the Clinical Labroatory Medicine course for the Physician Assistant program.  Ms. Webb provides lectures and laboratories in clinical microbiology for multiple programs in the School of Health Professions and the School of Medicine.

She was the recipient of the National Key to the Future Award from the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences in 2014

  Dr. Janelle Chiasera currently serves as the Chair of the Department
of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences and Interim Program Director, Professor
in the Clinical Laboratory Science Program.  Janelle is responsible for teaching
the clinical chemistry to clinical laboratory science students.  Janelle joined
UAB in 2006 where she served as the program director for the Clinical
Laboratory Science Program.  She is an active member of the American
Association of Clinical Chemistry and American Socieity for Clinical Laboratory
Science.  Dr. Chiasera received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical
Technology from Bowling Green State University, her MS degree in Allied
Medicine from The Ohio State Universtiy, and her Masters of Arts and Doctorate
in Quantitative Research, Evaluation, and Measurement from The Ohio State
University.

  Dr. Oliveira is an Assistant Professor for the UAB Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program. She has received her Bachelors in Science in Medical Technology from Brazil. She holds a Masters in Science (Biophysics), a Masters in Science in Public Health (Epidemiology) and a doctoral degree in Public Health (Global Health). Ana has worked at UAB as a bench research scientist mainly in area of Infectious Diseases for many years and has also worked as a clinical researcher in the area of Rheumatology. In addition, Ana has worked in Public Health practice serving as a Senior Epidemiologist for the Alabama Department of Public Health where she was responsible for outbreak investigation and response, and communicable diseases surveillance.

   Brianna Miller is an Assistant Professor in the UAB Clinical Laboratory Sciences program. She was in clinical practice in UAB’s Transfusion Medicine for 7 years prior to joining the School of Health Professions in 2010.Ms. Miller received her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Judson College (2002) and her Master of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2004). She holds a current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

  Michelle Brown is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Education Coordinator for the UAB Clinical Laboratory Science Program. She was in clinical practice in the UAB Transfusion Service for 10 year prior to joining the School of Health Professions. In her 10 years in the clinical setting, Michelle enjoyed working in the Transfusion Service as a Medical Technologist, Supervisor, Therapeutic Apheresis Specialist, and Quality Coordinator. She also played an active role in the education of residents, nurses, and perfusionists in the intricacies of transfusion therapy for various patient populations. She has extensive knowledge and experience in transfusion medicine which allows her to educate a wide variety of practitioners in immunohematology and transfusion therapy.

Ms. Brown received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Auburn University and completed a clinical internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. She received a Master of Science degree from UAB in Clinical Laboratory Science where she concentrated in Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine. She is among an elite group of practitioners who hold a Specialist in Blood Bank certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
