Applications to the MS in Nutrition Sciences, Dietitian Education Program Track are completed through the UAB Graduate School admissions process. Please select this link for additional information concerning the specific admissions requirements for the Dietitian Education Program Track as well as information concerning applying as a graduate student at UAB.

If you have completed your undergraduate degree but have not completed 18 hours in prerequisite nutrition courses you must apply to the UAB Graduate School, MS in Nutrition Sciences, Lifestyle Management and Disease Prevention Track (LMDP) before applying to the DEP-C. See prerequisite requirements for admissions to the LMDP.

Tracks and Curriculum

The Dietitian Education Program is an ACEND Coordinated Dietetics Program. Students in the MS in Nutrition Sciences, Dietitian Education Program have two options for completing their training in nutrition and dietetics: the Dietitian Education Program Track (DEP) and the Dietitian Education Program Graduate Certificate (DEP-C). Both tracks must complete specific courses according to a planned and structured sequence of study. Students fulfill both core requirements and professional practice requirements in a logical order. The sequence is intended to facilitate scholarly proficiency, distinctive achievement and entry-level  practice skills.

History

1957UAB has a more than 75-year history of excellence in nutrition research and education. Dr. Butterworth, who was a pioneer in promoting nutrition courses for medical students founded one of the first medical school nutrition courses in the U.S. at UAB. In 1963, the American Dietetic Association accredited the Dietetic Internship (DI). Since 1970, DI graduates have been eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians (established that year) and have consistently rated high on the examination. The MS in Nutrition Sciences, Dietitian Education Program (DEP) is an extension of the overall mission of the University; the School; and the Department, to provide excellence in dietetics education which is consistent with the goals of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Students enrolled in the Dietitian Education Program are considered graduates of an accredited program upon successful completion.
