Student Involvement welcomes new assistant director
Student Involvement & Leadership recently welcomed its new assistant director for Leadership and Service Lauren Hobbs. Lauren comes to UAB from Auburn University where she served as the student employment coordinator in the career center.

UAB Student Affairs names assistant vice president of Student Experience
Mary Wallace, Ph.D., has been named assistant vice president for Student Experience in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Wallace has more than 23 years of experience in service to students; most recently serving as associate dean of students and director of Campus Life at Louisiana State University (LSU). Her official start date is July 10, 2017.

Division of Student Affairs hosts its first One-Day Conference
UAB Student Affairs’ professional development committee recently hosted its first One-Day Conference, which was themed "Creating a community, Building connections". More than 100 Blazers attended the free event that was open to all Student Affairs professionals and students.

John Jones, Ph.D, vice president for Student Affairs and interim provost for UAB, recently published a chapter in the book "Using CAS Professional Standards: Diverse Examples of Practice".

UAB Student Affairs’ professional development committee recently celebrated divisional staff with its annual awards dinner. Staff were treated to a wonderful dinner by Campus Dining and music by the jazz music by a talented student ensemble.

Sean Ries, director of UAB Campus Recreation, recently received the Quest X award by Centers LLC, the national organization that manages university recreation centers.

Student Affairs' first staff bake-off a sweet treat
The Student Affairs Dessert Bake-Off Competition presented by the Professional Development Committee was a huge success. The winner of the competition was Brandon Brown of Student Housing and Residence Life who made TwoMama’s Skillet Apple Pie. Brandon also won the People’s Choice Award.

UAB’s Quang Do to present at statewide poetry event
Quang Do, coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life for UAB Student Involvement and Leadership, is a Student Affairs professional by day and a renowned poet by night. He will be the featured at the Poetry Out Loud state finals in Montgomery on Monday, Feb. 20 at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

The Professional Development Committee will host the Student Affairs Dessert Bake-Off Competition. If you have a knack for baking, enter your favorite baked treats to win. The competition will be on Thursday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in HSC 314.

Giving to others, comes back to you
Veterans Services recently hosted a toy drive to lighten the burden of less fortunate students who are also veterans. They presented toys and bikes to grateful men and women who were able to a put a smile on the faces of their children.
