What is behavioral threat assessment and management?

Behavioral threat assessment and management is a process for identifying, assessing and managing behavioral threats.

Why was the UAB and UAB Medicine Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team (BTAM) created?

UAB and UAB Medicine are committed to creating a safe, secure, and healthy campus environment for all students, employees, and visitors. Having a behavioral threat assessment and management team has become a best practice on campuses across the country.

UAB has developed its team and processes under the guidance of Sigma Threat Assessment, a consultant that has also assisted the University of Alabama, Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

How does the BTAM process relate to other university policies and procedures?

BTAM investigations occur on a parallel course with other university policies and procedures that relate to behavior and safety — for example, the university’s Student Code of Conduct.

How do I know if my information should be reported?

Any situation that could result in a threat to the safety and well-being of the campus community should be reported. Any potentially relevant information could be related to other incidents or issues and could help inform ongoing investigations.
