literaciesforthefuture wordmark UAB Libraries, in collaboration with the Office for Access and Engagement, is pleased to host Literacies for the Future.

According to the National Council of Teachers of English, “literacy is the way that we interact with the world around us, how we shape it and are shaped by it. It is how we communicate with others via reading and writing, but also by speaking, listening, and creating.”   Today’s secondary students (grades 9-12) must transform how they read and make meaning, as they now encounter not only traditional text-based information but also multimodal texts that may include words, audio, and video, and may be presented electronically or in print form. Fluency in multiple literacies is crucial for a high quality of life. Low literacy rates in a community are linked to poverty, lower health outcomes, and higher crime rates.

Literacies for the Future is a free, week-long summer program designed for high school students in grades 10 to 12 within the Birmingham City Schools.

The program will enroll up to 20 participants and feature a rich curriculum of literacy-focused educational sessions and thoughtfully designed enrichment activities. The week will culminate with final presentations that aim to highlight students' interests and creativity. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided daily.

We are very excited about this new initiative and hope that you will join us. Registration is required to attend.
