Virtual Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair

2021 Fair Will be Held Virtually

The UAB Center for Community OutReach Development (CORD) is pleased to host the 2021 Virtual Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (CARSEF). The fair will be held as a virtual competition. Students will provide video presentations of their projects to be judged within their division and category. Middle school students will compete in the Junior Division and high school will compete in our Senior Division. Participants will also select the category their project will be placed to compete on their application. Students can compete individually or in a team of up to 3 members. Participants are also required to submit an application and additional paperwork. The Fair is open to all middle and high school students in Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dekalb, Etowah, Jefferson, Randolph, St. Clair, Shelby, Talladega, and Walker counties. Typically, students must win 1st – 3rd place in their school or district Science and Engineering Fair. However, if your school does not have a fair, you may compete in the UAB Fair by recommendation from your science teacher.

To Advance to the Alabama State Fair and the Intel International Fair, students MUST complete all requirements prior to the deadlines designated by the Intel Science Fair Guidelines. All presenters must meet the Intel Science Fair animal protection and human use requirements prior to being allowed to present.

Important Dates:

February 1, 2021: CARSEF APPLICATIONS AND PAPWERWORK DUE.

February 18, 2021: VIDEO PRESENTATIONS DUE.

Students/Teachers must email a video project presentation to Kevin Jarrett at kjarrett@uab.edu. Middle school time limit is 4 minutes. High school time limit in 8 minutes. Video presentations received after February 18, 2021 will NOT be eligible to compete. Judges will be provided access to the project videos for review.

Video Presentation Requirements
    Each competitor will submit posterboard video summary or a voice-over powerpoint presentation
    Explain the research/engineering question addressed
    Explain why it is important and how they did the research/engineering project
    Explain what you found and what the findings mean. 
    Include a PDF of the posterboard components

March 6, 2021: Award winners will be posted on the CARSEF website.


The forms, applications, and video submissions must be emailed to Kevin Jarrett at kjarrett@uab.edu

Regional Fair 1st – 3rd place winners, in each category, will advance to compete at the Virtual State Fair in April. Top four Senior Division winners of the UAB Regional Fair will automatically advance to the Virtual International Science and Engineering Fair held in May.
