Brian P. Hinote (PhD 2007) holds the faculty rank of Professor, and serves as Associate Vice Provost for Data Analytics and Student Success in the Office of Student Success at Middle Tennessee State University.
He leads a wide range of key strategic initiatives in areas as diverse as advising, supplemental instruction, educational technology, data analytics, and predictive modeling.
Most of his recent work involves leveraging data and technology to improve key institutional performance indicators; support faculty and other campus colleagues; and promote student persistence, retention, and completion. As the Systems/Applications Administrator for EAB Navigate (formerly SSC Campus) and APS (Academic Performance Solutions), Dr. Hinote possess extensive experience with student data systems and predictive analytics, and is a nationally recognized expert in student success, education technology, data analytics, and supplemental instruction methodologies.
Hinote has accumulated more than a decade of distinguished teaching, research, service, and academic program leadership. In addition to clinical and research experience in areas as diverse as pediatrics, neurology, and cell biology, his interdisciplinary work appears in multiple books and peer-reviewed journals in social science, nursing, and medicine. With previous research stretching across multiple continents, his most recent work focuses on the various ways that social and behavioral science perspectives intersect and inform health care delivery and policy, clinical practice, and the work of various health professions. This line of inquiry has culminated in his latest book project (with fellow UAB alumnus Dr. Jason Adam Wasserman), Social & Behavioral Science for Health Professionals (Rowman & Littlefield), which is currently under revision for its second edition.
As an experienced educator, researcher, and higher education leader, Dr. Hinote works with students in various health and data science fields, as well as health professionals already in the workforce. He has served as a university administration fellow in the Office of the Provost at Tennessee Technological University, and as Program Coordinator in MTSU's graduate program in Health Care Informatics. He is an active member of the Graduate and Honors Faculties at MTSU, and a former officer in the Faculty Senate’s Steering and Liaison Committees. Hinote has mentored many students from diverse backgrounds, and has presented or published papers with several of them. His research has been funded by multiple university grant and national research awards. His current research, with colleagues from multiple health and social science disciplines, is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
Hinote is a graduate of Vanderbilt University’s Peabody Institute in Higher Education Management, and has trained with principals at Kotter International in change management methodologies (Change Essentials) and with colleagues at The Stanford d.school (Design Thinking). He also earned his advanced specialist certification in Supplemental Instruction (SI) methodologies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and is an alumnus of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education (MDP).
