BA Theatre
The Performance Concentration emphasizes training for the actor’s voice, body, and mind -- the essential tools of the actor’s trade. Through careful study and extensive practice with movement techniques and vocal exploration, acting students gain the skills they need for their careers in performance.
Why Study Performance?
Diverse Coursework
The Performance Concentration builds on the common 30-hour core with intensive training in acting, directing, voice, movement, and many other aspects of performing for the stage.
Work with Working Actors
Our Performance Faculty is made up of professional performers with years of experience and strong ties to the working world of show business. And they are deeply committed to their own continuing education, through professional organizations such as SAG, VASTA, SSDC, and Actor’s Equity.Performance Opportunities
In ordinary, non-pandemic times, the Department of Theatre produces at least four mainstage shows each year and at least one “showcase” production, in addition to casting four troupes of performers who travel to different venues around the state on Fridays. Our priority in all of these cases is to give as many of our Performance students as possible the best opportunity possibly to learn, grow, and explore their talent and craft.

When to Audition
The General Theatre Concentration offers students with a wide range of interests an opportunity to explore theatre in all its many forms and aspects. Our General Theatre majors tend to be students who want to explore and understand theatre but do not intend to specialize as performers, designers, or technicians. Many of our General Theatre majors go on to be teachers, scholars, and writers for stage and screen.
Why Choose General Theatre?
Diverse Opportunities and Talented Faculty
As a General Theatre major, you have access to our multiple-award-winning faculty and depth of knowledge, combined with the opportunities to participate in any aspect of theatre to which you find yourself attracted.Explore the Theatre Profession
Your years of college should be a time for personal growth and for gaining deeper understanding of your own interests and sensibilities. Through the General Theatre Concentration, anyone interested in any aspect of the theatre can deepen their understanding -- and perhaps determine the course of all their future study and work.
Script Reading and Script Writing
The General Theatre Concentration emphasizes the study of theatre arts through experience but also through the written word. Our General Theatre majors read a lot, and often find this leads them to creating new written works themselves -- including plays and screenplays.

The Design/Tech Concentration emphasizes training for scenic, lighting, and costume designers, as well as those seeking careers as stage managers, technical directors, and other technical professions.
Students who have interest and ability in any of the theatre design fields are encouraged to specialize in their field of interest, but also to experience and learn about the other fields with which their work must coordinate. So, for example, lighting designers study scenic design and costume design, so they may understand the crucial interactions of color, texture, and movement.
Why Study Design and Technology?

Award-winning Designers and Technicians
Our Design/Tech Faculty is made up of award-winning professional designers and technicians, all of them constantly in demand to design aspects of productions for our stages and for many others. All of their years of experience can be passed on to you in the collaborative work you will do with these master artists.
Beyond the Big Three
Students of Scenic, Lighting, and Costume Design will have the opportunity to also explore sound design, hair and wig styling, advanced stage makeup, and much more.
