Meet Dr. Mary Ann Bodine Al-Sharif (Dr. BAS, for short), an assistant professor and program coordinator of our Higher Education Administration program!

Dr. BAS, for short, has been working in higher education for over 11 years as a faculty member and as a student affairs and services administrator.

She has been a catalyst in her field and has been recognized globally for her work and research. Her research focuses on current global movements in educational reform, international higher education, student development, and social justice and advocacy issues within higher education.

Recently, Dr. BAS was selected for the 2021-2022 UAB Faculty Fellows in Education Abroad program, which is designed to accelerate the work of faculty members eager to develop exemplary curricular approaches to education.

We are so proud to have Dr. BAS as a faculty member within the UAB School of Education! Get to know a little bit more about Dr. BAS below.

SOE: What advice do you have for students?

BAS: Get connected. Take advantage of the opportunities you have to network in your field while you are in school. These are connections that you will use for a lifetime. Also, if there is an opportunity to research with your faculty, take advantage of it. Put yourself out there! You never know the possibilities that this will bring!

SOE: Do you have a favorite quote? If so, what is it?

BAS: "When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful" - Malala Yousafzai

I love this quote because you never know when your voice might be the one that creates change or empowers another who is without a voice in this world.

SOE: What is your favorite part of your job as an Assistant Professor in Higher Education?

BAS: My students. I genuinely love my students and seeing them succeed. I cannot imagine doing this work without student engagement.

SOE: What is a fun fact about yourself?

BAS: I love to travel! There are so many places that I have already been to, but so many more that I want to visit and work in!
