Shawn C. Smith is an experienced occupational health and safety leader with more than two decades of service across the Department of the Navy, Military Sealift Command, and the maritime industry. Most recently, he served as the Director of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations & Environment), where he oversaw global Occupational & Environmental Health programs supporting over 800,000 Sailors, Marines, and civilian personnel. His portfolio includes advancing Navy-wide strategies for chemical exposure control, blast‑overpressure risk management, shipyard safety, and large‑scale hazard‑abatement programs. Prior to this role, he led safety and risk‑management efforts for Naval Sea Systems Command, six naval shipyards, and a worldwide workforce spanning shipbuilding, repair, and expeditionary operations.
Smith’s career includes extensive seagoing experience as a deck officer, instructor, and maritime‑safety professional, as well as longstanding service as a Navy Reserve Captain in the Strategic Sealift Readiness Group. He has contributed to national and international safety standards through the ANSI Z359 Fall Protection Committee and the NFPA Marine Chemist Qualification Board, and is a frequent presenter on human factors, fall protection, and occupational health. Smith holds a Master of Engineering in Advanced Safety & Engineering Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from Texas A&M University.
