Research and Teaching Interests: Refractory ceramic materials, thermo-mechanical properties, thermal properties, and corrosion properties of high temperature materials.

Office Hours: Off site

Education:

  • B.S., Ceramic Engineering, University of Missouri, Rolla
  • M.S., Materials Science and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Ph.D., Ceramic Engineering, University of Missouri, Rolla

Dr. Hemrick brings a mixed background of academic and applied research, which he desires to share with the new generation of Materials Engineers. He spent the first thirteen years of his career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a Post-Doctoral Student, Junior Staff Member, and then Full Research Staff Member before transitioning to industry as first a Senior Research Engineer and then as the Director of Technology for an industrial refractory ceramic manufacturer. During his fifteen plus years in the field of Ceramic Engineering his research interests have taken him into various areas involving refractory ceramic research and development, evaluation of thermal insulation materials, thermo-mechanical testing of ceramic/metallic/polymer materials, and mechanical evaluation and analysis of nuclear fuel cladding materials. He loves the field of ceramics due to the ability to work with varying organizations including the US Department of Energy, NASA, and major US Manufacturing Industries.

Dr. Hemrick is currently an adjunct faculty member of the UAB Materials Engineering Department and a member of the departments Industrial Advisory Board. He hopes to provide industrially relevant educational experiences to today’s current students through exposure to commercially viable technologies and environments and also is a big proponent of participation in Professional Societies. His current research interests include the identification and utilization of new aggregate and bond systems for refractory ceramics, the thermo-mechanical and thermo-chemical interactions of ceramic materials with molten metal and glass, and advanced installation techniques for the application of monolithic refractory materials.

Ceramic Engineer with over fifteen years of experience in refractory ceramic research and development, development and evaluation of thermal insulation materials, thermo-mechanical testing of ceramic/metallic/polymer materials, and mechanical evaluation and analysis of nuclear fuel cladding materials. Has extensive experience in leading both corporate and multi-disciplined research teams, managing department and project budgets and resources, and assembling diverse research teams with both academic and industrial participation in response to funding solicitations. Has mentored undergraduate and graduate students, technicians, and junior staff as well as acted as a facilitator for government facility user programs.
