The Faculty Senate will be meeting, via Zoom, on Tuesday morning, April 14, 7:30-9:15 a.m.

For protection against “Zoom-bombing” and to avoid technical difficulty caused by too many participants on the meeting, we will be utilizing a password to enter the meeting. Faculty may request, by Monday, to attend as a guest. If you would like to attend as a guest, please contact Faculty Senate Office, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Monday at 2:00 p,m,, to request the password in order to be able to attend. We will need to limit the number of guests to avoid overwhelming the bandwidth and creating technical difficulty. Minutes from the meeting will be sent to all faculty as soon as possible.

All faculty can email their questions, concerns, ideas, etc., before the meeting, by Monday at 5:00 p.m., to Senate Chair Ria Hearld (This email address is being protected from spambots. Faculty attending the meeting may also text their anonymous questions, input, concerns, ideas, etc., during the meeting to Senate Chair-Elect Mike Sloane or Senator-at-Large Kelly Hill — their cell numbers will be given in the chat box. Zoom details:

  1. Everyone please turn off their video (you can use a still picture), so we avoid technical difficulty.
  2. If we experience difficulty due to too many persons, the Chair in that instance may need to ask some guests to exit the meeting.
  3. Everyone please sign in upon entering meeting, by typing into chat.
  4. To everyone in attendance: if you would like to speak, please type a request to speak in the chat box, to everyone, in order for Chair Hearld to recognize you/allow you to speak.

Hearld will give her monthly Chair’s report and update. The following persons will give an update on COVID-19 with a Q&A and faculty collaboration session: Provost and Senior Vice President, Pam Benoit; UAB President, Ray Watts; and Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration, Allen Bolton. Other administrators will be available to answer questions or concerns.

The Senate will do the second reading and vote on the Faculty Policies & Procedures Committee-proposed updates for the 2020 UAB Faculty Handbook. Dan Givan, chair of the Faculty Policies & Procedures Committee, will be available for questions.

The Senate will do the second reading and vote on the Signature Core Curriculum Committee’s proposed documents regarding the UAB Signature Core Curriculum. Alison Chapman and Suzanne Judd, Committee co-chairs, will be available for questions.

An update regarding Faculty Senate elections will be given by Faculty Senate Associate Chair and Chair of the Elections Committee, Claudio Busettini. Senate Committee Chairs will report on committee activities. Important information coming out of select university-wide committees will be shared.

Also on the agenda is an open forum time for faculty to raise concerns, ideas, and suggestions, and to make suggestions regarding items that the various Faculty Senate Standing Committees should address. Faculty attending the meeting should text any anonymous questions, input, concerns, ideas, etc., during the meeting, to Senate Chair-Elect Mike Sloane or Senator-at-Large Kelly Hill — their cell numbers will be given in the chat box.
