Reciprocal Exchange and Affiliation Agreements
Faculty, departments, schools and colleges may request new study abroad affiliation agreements or reciprocal exchanges. We recommend that faculty interested in developing new partnerships contact Education Abroad before completing any paperwork.
Education Abroad will facilitate the negotiation of the agreement with the Partner University or Affiliate and coordinate with UAB Business Contracts for review and signature. Agreements may take several months to finalize. After an agreement is executed, it may take an additional semester before students can begin participating.
Considerations for Establishing a New Partnership
- Does the partner send an official transcript directly to the Office of Education Abroad that:
- arrives at the Office of Education Abroad within 4 months of the program's end;
- is written in English or a language in which UAB offers a degree program;
- lists a specific grade for each course;
- lists credits for each course using the U.S. semester hour system, ECTS, or number of contact hours; and
- is issued by a university accredited by the national ministry/department of education of that country?
- Are the program dates
- posted online, including dates of arrival, orientation, classes, and final exams and
- roughly matching UAB’s fall, spring, or summer terms (i.e. fall semester finals are complete before the end of the calendar year)?
- Does the program provide comprehensive assistance for UAB students for applying, obtaining their visa, securing housing, selecting courses, registering, and orientation?
- Does the program post course information online that
- includes a subject, course level, title, number of semester hours, and detailed description for each course;
- is easy for UAB students to find and view at least 60 days before the start of the term;
- is written in English or a language in which UAB offers a major degree program;
- is up-to-date; and
- is accompanied by syllabi, in English and containing all components required by the UAB faculty handbook, upon request by the UAB student.
- Does the program offer courses that count toward UAB degree requirements?
Customized Study Abroad
Agreements for customized abroad programs vary greatly. Education Abroad will coordinate with UAB Contracts to complete the contractual process. Please note that the faculty member may need to assist with securing the contract from the provider.
UAB’s Faculty Fellows in Education Abroad program is a fellowship designed to accelerate the work of faculty members eager to develop exemplary curricular approaches to education. These courses will promote active and ethical citizenship, cultural immersion, and community engagement. The program aims to integrate the philosophy, pedagogy, and process of faculty-led education abroad into the UAB academic environment.
The goal of the program is to provide a venue for faculty to design a new course or to modify an existing course to include a faculty-led education abroad component. The Fellows program is structured around a series of workshops designed to help faculty develop a strong background in education abroad.
-
Benefits of Participation
For faculty members accepted into the program, the Fellowship allows for an intellectual venue in which faculty can exchange ideas with an academically diverse group and learn from the experiences of other Fellows in the program. Faculty will leave the program with a comprehensive understanding of faculty-led programs and the tools and resources needed to successfully propose a faculty-led program and course.
-
Expectations
Faculty Fellows in Education Abroad will be responsible for attending 5-6 sessions. It is essential that you attend all of the meetings. If you have a class conflict or anticipate that you may be attending conferences or other meetings, please apply at another time when you will be able to make these meetings a priority. The best possible experience takes place when all of the members of the program can attend and discuss the topics presented.
-
Eligibility and Selection Process
The Faculty Fellows in Education Abroad program is open to all faculty members involved in teaching (tenured and tenure-track faculty, professional and administrative educational staff, and adjunct/lecturer instructors) from any department on campus.
Applicants will be selected based on the quality of their personal statements, the potential sustainability of the course(s) they propose, and the support they have from their schools/college and academic departments. The program aims for Fellows from diverse areas of campus, so multiple members applying from the same department are discouraged.
