Supporting research in aging is one of our central tenets. ICAR supports research in aging from “Chromosomes to Communities”, therefore, the Center strives to serve all the research community with a focus in aging research – from projects in basic biology of aging, to clinical projects related to aging processes and comorbidities, as well as community-oriented research focused on healthy aging and aging disparities. To achieve this goal, ICAR uses several strategies:

  • In 2019 the UAB Nathan Shock Center of Excellence on Basic Biology of Aging and the UAB Alzheimer’s Disease Center became integral part of ICAR and their directors serve as co-Directors of ICAR.
  • The UAB Claude D. Pepper Project is an initiative to bring to UAB a NIH funded center that will allow UAB to provide more resources and support to train the next generation of aging researchers.
  • ICAR maintains synergistic partnerships with several other centers at UAB, including the UAB McKnight Brain Institute, the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, the UAB Deep South Resource Center for Minority Aging Research, and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science. In addition, ICAR maintains a long-term partnership with the Birmingham VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center.
