If your office requires a new data jack, you're in luck! The process has been streamlined and is now easier than ever. Let's take a look at what a data jack is, why you might need one, and how to order one for your office.

A data jack, also known as a network jack, is a hardware device that allows your office's networking equipment (like computers, printers, and servers) to connect to a wired network. It acts as an interface between your equipment and the larger network, enabling data transfer and communication.

Now, you might wonder: why would you need a new data jack? There might be several reasons. Perhaps you have new equipment that needs network access, or you're expanding your office space and need additional connectivity points. Or, an existing data jack might have become faulty and needs replacement.

To order a new data jack, you can use the online IT Service Portal. Here are the detailed steps:

  1. Visit the IT Service Portal at uab.edu/techhelp.
  2. Click on the "Order Something" option.
  3. Log in using your UAB BlazerID.
  4. Choose "IT Engineering Request" under the Popular Items section or click on "Network, Voice, and Cellular" located on the left side of the page under the Categories section.
  5. Click again on "IT Engineering Request."
  6. Then, fill out the form for the service you need and attach a floor plan, which indicates where the new jack should be installed.

To activate a port on an existing data jack, you can follow the same steps from 1 to 4. After that, select "Telecom - Network Connections" and complete the required information.

Please note that for all new jacks in hospital buildings, you need to submit a Hospital Work Order. Port activations in these locations should be requested through HSIS.
