Scott Margolies, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, has enthusiastically accepted the position of Anesthesia Medical Director at UAB West, effective February 1, 2021.

Dr. Margolies obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2000, followed by a residency in anesthesiology in our department between 2000 and 2004. After completing his residency, he stayed on as a faculty member, and served as an assistant medical director at the TKC Preoperative Assessment Clinic. In 2005, Dr. Margolies joined Southern Perioperative Services (SPS), a well-established and highly regarded private practice in the Birmingham area. SPS has strong ties to UAB Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, and both our professional and business relationships are outstanding. In light of the strong business relationship between SPS and our department, during 2009 to 2010, Dr. Margolies returned to UAB (in conjunction with SPS) to help our department’s rapid growth in the cardiac arena at the time. During his tenure with SPS, Dr. Margolies spent significant time at UAB West because the service contract was jointly managed by our department and SPS. Over the years, Dr. Margolies has established a solid collegial working relationship with UAB West surgeons, CRNAs, perioperative nursing, and hospital leadership. He has been instrumental during our service transition at UAB West over the last six months, and undoubtedly will provide strong leadership at UAB West for many years to come.

As we move forward under Dr. Margolies’s leadership at UAB West, we would like to thank Matt Sherrer, M.D., MBA, FAFSA, for his strong leadership as he managed and coordinated the UAB West practice transition over the past six months! Dr. Sherrer’s unflagging energy and commitment at the helm of the transition made it successful. We would also like to thank Mr. Pennington, our CRNA colleagues, perioperative nursing, surgeons and support personnel for your support during this transition and for making our team feel most welcome!
