Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce that the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has appointed Beomjy Kim Ohlman, M.D., as the associate medical director of the UAB Preoperative Assessment, Consultation & Treatment Clinic (PACT).

Dr. Ohlman received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at UAB, and also attended medical school and completed her residency at the university. Dr. Ohlman’s clinical interests include perioperative medicine, enhanced recovery, and resident education.

The PACT stated mission is “to optimize surgical readiness to promote the best outcomes.” To accomplish this mission, a strong educational initiative for residents and advanced practice providers will be implemented and led by Dr. Ohlman, with the primary goals of spearheading curriculum development and teaching core competencies.

UAB Hospital performs approximately 38,000 cases annually. Preoperative assessment by the PACT Clinic is an expected requirement prior to elective procedures. The PACT Clinic performs approximately 135 outpatient preoperative assessments daily from two locations (The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital and UAB Hospital-Highlands). In addition, the clinic has an inpatient component of work performed by the Inpatient Evaluation Team (IPET), accounting for approximately 80 inpatient preoperative assessments.

Dr. Ohlman is excited to accept and lead our efforts of continued excellence in perioperative medicine education and patient optimization. We look forward to her partnership with Jeff Simmons, M.D., to serve the MSA faculty, our department, and perioperative services. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Ohlman in her new role.

Sincerely,
Dan E. Berkowitz, M.D.
