The 1st Southeastern Brain Tumor Research Meeting (SBTRM) to be held May 9-10, 2019 in Birmingham, Alabama will be supported by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s T32 Training Grant in Brain Tumor Biology for which Dr. Etty (Tika) Benveniste is the Director.  The SBTRM will seek to build lasting collaborations among investigators in the southeastern United States whose research focuses on adult and pediatric brain tumors.  The SBTRM will focus on the education and training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing opportunities to develop critical professional skills in a setting that models national scientific meetings.

Keynote Speaker: Duane Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., is Director of the University of Florida Brain Tumor Immunotherapy Program and Co-Director of the Preston A Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy.  He is the State of Florida Endowed Cancer Research Chair and Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Mitchell’s research seeks to determine how to best treat glioblastoma and other aggressive gliomas using immunotherapies, including vaccination based approaches.  Please learn more about our keynote speaker at: here.

Oral Presentations by Trainees and their Mentors: Faculty mentors and their graduate student or post-doctoral fellow trainees will provide short talks on their most recent research during sessions that are organized by theme.  Faculty mentors should provide an overview of the critical questions remaining in brain tumor biology that their laboratory seeks to answer as well as a summary of recent important findings by the research group.  After this short introductory lecture, a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow will provide a talk about their most recent research project.  Paired mentor/trainee presentations will be prioritized, but opportunities for individual talks may arise.  Judges will choose outstanding talks for awards.

Moderators:   Each session of the oral presentations will be led by a trainee who ensures that the speakers remain on schedule, moderates questions, and summarizes the scientific content.

Poster Presentations:  All trainees are encouraged to participate in the competitive poster session.  Poster presenters and viewer interactions serve as a template for the development of collaborations at national meetings.  Judges will choose outstanding posters for awards.
