We aim to prepare residents for state-of-the-art clinical practice while equipping them to sustain excellence throughout their careers.
Through our education-focused mission, the UAB Depression and Suicide Center trains future psychiatrists in the assessment and treatment of depression and suicidality, with particular emphasis on treatment‑resistant mood disorders. Residents receive extensive classroom instruction, supervised clinical experience in a treatment‑resistant depression clinic, and advanced training in psychopharmacology and neuromodulation therapies. The program emphasizes mastery of outpatient psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and management, along with a strong grounding in psychotherapy. Residents also develop a deep understanding of mood disorder pathophysiology and the scientific principles guiding current and emerging treatments, enabling them to critically evaluate and apply new therapies in clinical practice.
