Leveraging gamified learning, the Department of Family and Community Medicine is working to revolutionize medical education proving that, for learners, practice makes perfect.
Programs across the state are invited to join the 2026 Alabama Family Residency Cup, which features five weeks of competition as residents compete as a team to answer daily questions designed to cover topics considered relevant for clinical application or for board examinations.
Interested faculty members are also encouraged to register and play along—which does not impact program scores—when Alabama Family Medicine Residency Cup competition begins on Sept. 1.

How to download and start the game
- Accessing the Kaizen platform
- Use the links above to join Kaizen as part of your Learning Community or as an individual in “stealth mode.”
- “Stealth mode” allows you to be completely hidden and you will not show up on leaderboard; however, you also won’t be able to contribute to teams score.
- Download “Kaizen Education” via your app store

- An email from Kaizendonotreply@uab.edu will arrive in your mailbox when you have completed the registration and will include links to both the app and browser
- Customization
- You may change your in app user-name
- Select the menu drop-down toggle in the top-left corner
- Select “player profile”
- Click to edit.
- Your name as you entered at registration will be at top, you may edit display name to whatever alias you desire – this will be all that’s visible to others in application
- Communication
- For difficulties with the app or other glitches, message the game manager through the application or email haliebiggs@uab.edu.

- Game Play and Question Schedule
- 3 questions will be released daily from Monday-Friday, starting September 1-30.
- Each player will receive the same questions at the same time.
- You must play through the questions in order release.
- These questions are intended to serve as study aid toward ITE but it does not replace your regular study towards your ITE.
- Points
- We aren’t emphasizing the game elements in order of importance but points will be awarded for correct answers – 5 points per answer.
- Additionally there are hot streak badges for answering multiple questions correctly in a row. You will receive 5 points for each and they can only be earned once.
- Game End
- The questions will be accessible throughout the game in case you missed a day that you need to go back and answer.
- To access completed questions, select the menu bar in top right and then select answer history. The questions will be in order with brief label regarding content.
