Lung Health

Our Mission

Since its inception, we have endeavored to deliver world-class services focusing on research, education and patient care as they apply to the field of lung health. The Lung Health Center currently has ongoing research in Alpha-1 Antitypsin Deficiency, Asthma, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, COPD, Emphysema, Pneumonia, lung transplant, lung cancer, COVID-19, Sepsis, and ARDS.

Our Key Program Areas

The Lung Health Center currently has key program areas spanning Airway Disease, Interestitital Lung Disease (ILD), Intensive Care Unity (ICU) research, Lung Transplant, Thoracic Oncology, Pneumonia, Asthma, and COPD.

History

william baileyWilliam Bailey, M.D.The LHC was founded in 1986 by Emeritus Professor William Bailey to conduct a series of NIH-funded Lung Health Studies. Dr. Bailey served as the Medical Director from 1986-2007. Since its inception, we have endeavored to deliver world-class services focusing on research, education and patient care as they apply to the field of lung health.

The UAB Lung Health Center was designated as a pilot UAB University-Wide Interdisciplinary Research Center (UWIRC) in 2020. The expansion of the Center’s footprint has been overseen by Dr. Mark Dransfield, who has served as the Medical Director since 2009 and Dr. Ed Blalock, who serves as the Scientific Director. Under the leadership of Dr. Dransfield, the Center has grown from 3 extramurally funded investigators to over 20, and total research funding for research has grown from under $5 million to over $20 million in extramural funding.
