Jacque Shaia Headshot The University of Alabama at Birmingham Neurosurgery Leadership Council (NLC) has elected new officers, with Jacquelyn “Jacque” Shaia, J.D., Ph.D., (pictured)  serving as president and Diane Fisher as secretary.

The announcement was made during the council’s most recent meeting on Feb. 27.

The NLC, formerly known as the Neurosurgery Women’s Leadership Council, was founded in 2011 and is composed of grateful patients, family members and supporters who are dedicated to advancing the future of neurosurgery. The council plays a crucial role in promoting awareness of the UAB Department of Neurosurgery’s impact and supporting its initiatives.

Shaia, an associate professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Communication Studies and director of the public relations curriculum, previously served as NLC president and now returns for a second term.

“I am excited to once again lead this incredible group of individuals who are dedicated to supporting neurosurgery at UAB,” Shaia said. “The work being done within the department is truly life-changing, and I look forward to helping share that impact with our community.”

Fisher, a founding member of the NLC, was elected as secretary.

Ashley McMahon, who served as president for the past two years, steps down as Shaia assumes the role.

The NLC will continue its mission to support the Department of Neurosurgery and its residency program, ensuring the advancement of neurosurgical care and education at UAB.
