Bunnell is a deep-rooted Blazer, having completed an undergraduate degree in biology, medical school, and residency at UAB before joining the institution as a faculty member.
Bunnell’s inspiration to pursue a career in the field of anesthesiology stemmed from a combined interest in physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. While providing exceptional patient care, Bunnell hopes to make an impact at UAB by educating and mentoring future anesthesiologists.
Bunnell shares insight into her educational background, what inspired her career, and what excites her most about stepping into the role of assistant professor at UAB.
Can you share your professional background and experiences prior to joining our institution?
Bunnell: I joined UAB faculty following the completion of my residency program.
What inspired you to pursue a career in anesthesiology?
Bunnell: I was inspired to pursue a career in anesthesiology after seeing how anesthesiologists have the privilege of guiding patients through some of the most significant moments of their lives. The specialty's unique combination of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology—applied in real time to deliver safe, individualized care—made it the perfect fit for my interests and reinforced my desire to become an anesthesiologist.
What aspects of your new role here are you most excited about?
Bunnell: What excites me most is the opportunity to care for patients with complex medical conditions undergoing specialized procedures while mentoring our exceptional residents as they develop into the next generation of anesthesiologists.
