Anand Iyer, M.D., will receive UAB's Outstanding Young Alumni Award at the 2018 Alumni Leadership and Recognition Awards on Friday, Sept. 28, at 11:30 a.m. at the Alumni House. In 2017 Anand received the UAB Young Alumni Rising Star Award from the National Alumni Society.
Fifteen outstanding faculty members were named recipients of the 2018 Dean’s Excellence Awards, an honor recognizing exceptional contributions made by School of Medicine faculty in service, teaching, research, diversity enhancement and mentorship.
On March 26-30, 46 undergraduate students competed in the Dare to Diagnose competition. Dare to Diagnose was created by undergraduates in the Science and Technology Honors Program in partnership with faculty from the UAB School of Medicine.

Lisa Willett, M.D., MACM, program director for the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program and vice chair for Education and professor in the UAB Department of Medicine, has been named president-elect of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Council.

SPARC, a UAB Medicine and Medscape innovation initiative, awarded three winners shared funding of $40,000 in grants for quality improvement projects at the end of 2016. The winners recently shared their outcomes and insights from their projects approximately a year after receiving the funding.
Surya Bhatt, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, is the junior faculty winner of the Dean’s Excellence Award in Research.
Ken Saag, M.D., M.Sc., the Jane Knight Low professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, is the senior faculty winner of the Dean’s Excellence Award in Mentorship.
The UAB Libraries will host its 39th annual Reynolds-Finley Historical Lecture on Friday, March 9, at 4 p.m. This year’s speaker will be Stephen M. Taylor, M.D. Taylor will present a lecture titled “The Opioid Crisis.”

The purpose of these grants is to enable School of Medicine faculty members to organize and integrate multidisciplinary teams of accomplished investigators who will compete successfully for long-term support from funding agencies.
