Graduate Research Student Research Symposium set for May 13

rischKeynote speaker Neil Risch, Ph.D.The third bi-annual UAB GBS/JHS Graduate Research Student Research Symposium will take place on Friday, May 13 in the Alumni Theater and Ballroom of the UAB Hill Student Center.

The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks from Lori McMahon, Ph.D.,  dean of the UAB Graduate School;  David Schneider, Ph.D., associate dean of Graduate Biomedical Sciences; and Kathryn Oliver, president of the Graduate Biomedical Student Outreach.

Sixteen students representing GBS, JHS and affiliated departments will deliver presentations throughout morning and afternoon sessions. The morning sessions begin at 8:45 a.m.; and the afternoon sessions begin at 2:45 p.m. inside the HSC Alumni Theater.

Neil Risch, Ph.D., a world-renowned statistical geneticist and genetic epidemiologist at the University of California-San Francisco, will deliver the keynote speech from 11:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m . Risch holds many accolades at UCSF, including Lamond Family Foundation Distinguished Professor in Human Genetics, director at the Institute for Human Genetics and professor in the department of the Epidemiology and Biostatics. He’s also the 2015 president of the American Society of Human Genetics.  

Lunch will be served from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., followed by a poster session HSC ballroom. The evening will conclude with a cocktail hour at 5 p.m., followed by the reception and awards ceremony, featuring a performance by LiveWire Band, at 6 p.m. Click here to see the full agenda.

Postdocs will judge the poster session, while faculty will judge the platform presentations.
