Cordova, Alabama native Charles Minor is one of just 30 scholarship winners nationwide that have been selected to participate in the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute.
"I am very proud to be a recipient of this scholarship," said Minor. "This allowed me to be exposed to a lot of physicians that owned their own practice and learn what they actually do. The scope of Family Medicine is so much more broad than what I expected and what I hear other doctors talk about."
Minor attended UAB as an undergrad where he received a chemistry degree. Following graduation Minor spent one year at Auburn University before beginning medical school. He currently is in his second-year of medical school and serves as a learning communities representative for the Hamilton LC.
Minor will receive a $1,000 scholarship towards travel expenses to attend both the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students (National Conference) and the AAFP Foundation Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leadership Institute.
“Change requires strong leadership. Future physicians like Minor are the up-and-coming leaders with power to transform healthcare in American,” said AAFP Foundation President Hughes Melton. M.D. “We are pleased to have him join us in July as Scholar of the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute.”
Over the course of one year, the scholarship winners will work with a mentor to complete a project related t one of three tracks: Policy and Public Health Leadership, Personal and Practice Leadership and Philanthropic and Mission-Driven Leadership. Minor has chosen to work on a project in the Personal and Practice Leadership track.
“I hope to be able to work with physicians all over the Southeast and try to find a way I can go back and be a leader in my community,” Minor said.
At the conclusion of the year-long program, the projects will be evaluated and an additional $1,000 scholarship will be given to the top two medical students and the top two Family Medicine residents in each of the three tracks to attend the 2018 National Conference to present their winning projects.
In addition, one Best Project Award will be named for each of the three tracks, and will provide the recipient with an additional $3,000 scholarship for participation in a designated major event related to the track.
