UAB Graduate Medical Education hosted an orientation to welcome over 180 new residents and fellows on Wednesday, June 20. Throughout the day, residents and fellows enjoyed attending various sessions that covered topics to prepare them to begin training at UAB.
“I chose to come to the UAB School of Medicine for my residency, because I fell in love with the people and residents in the program,” said Victoria Wheeler, an incoming resident specializing in OB/GYN from Greenwood, Mississippi, who graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. “It feels like a big family here.”
Those in attendance learned about the quality initiatives for the hospital and risk management and compliance updates. This orientation marked the first year residents and fellows witnessed a discussion among leading experts about how to better care for the health care population of Alabama and address health care disparities in the Southeast. Additionally, residents and fellows were trained on AIDET, UAB Medicine’s communication tool, and were made aware of resources available for physician well-being.
Mobile, Alabama, native Adam Powell said he had three main factors in choosing the UAB School of Medicine for his residency. “It’s a good school and good location, but the people were the main factor,” said Powell who is specializing in pediatrics.
