The $50,000 scholarship is provided to help the student with the financial responsibility of the third and fourth year of medical school.

“Being chosen to receive such an honor from an organization like The Links Inc. at their National Assembly has been a life-changing experience, and a ‘thank you’ hardly seems sufficient,” said Nichols, the Waterproof, Louisiana, native.

Nichols received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University and a law degree from Georgia State University College of Law.

The Links recognizes that diversifying the physician workforce is one component that can improve the health of the African-American community. Knowing that the cost of a medical education is financially challenging, the organization offers five Scholars in Medicine scholarships in the amount of $25,000 per year for the students’ third and fourth years.

Established in 1946, The Links Inc. is an international, nonprofit corporation that consists of nearly 15,000 professional women of color. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organization filled with women committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African-Americans.
