Steinhilber named 2020 Dean's Excellence Award Winner in Teaching

Steinhilber head shotStarr Steinhilber, M.D., MPH, is the junior faculty winner of the 2020 Dean’s Excellence Award in Teaching. Steinhilber is an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and assistant program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Steinhilber is a role model and an exemplar of educational excellence with local, regional, and national impact. She meets trainees where they are and helps them to see the commonalities between academic GIM and many different academic medicine careers. As assistant program director, Steinbilber co-directs the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Curriculum, serves as core clinical faculty, co-directs the Clinician Educator Track, selects interns, and participates in the overall curriculum of the program. She has also presented and published at least ten clinical vignettes with trainees during her time in the Society for General Internal Medicine’s TEACH program. Steinhilber has received multiple teaching awards and notably received the Southern Society of General Internal Medicine Clinician Educator of the Year award in 2019.

“Dr. Steinhilber has already made an outsized contribution to our training program, university, and the field of academic medicine,” shared Dr. David A. Rogers, senior associate dean of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development in the School of Medicine. “She has inspired countless students, residents, and fellows along their careers in Quality and Patient Safety and Medical Education. She remains a steadfast champion for academic GIM specifically, and academic medicine broadly.”

Steinhilber completed medical school, master’s in public health, and her internal medicine residency at UAB. After a year as chief resident, she joined UAB faculty in 2015.
