wick manyW. J. Many Jr., M.D., founding dean of the UAB School of Medicine’s Montgomery Regional Medical Campus, will step back into the role temporarily as interim regional dean.

“It is my honor and privilege to once again be able to serve the UAB School of Medicine,” Many said. “Working with our partners at Baptist Health, I will endeavor to continue and expand the tradition of excellence in education and clinical care that has been synonymous with the Montgomery Regional Medical Campus."

Gustavo R. Heudebert, M.D., longtime medical educator who has lead the Montgomery Regional Campus as interim regional dean since October 1, 2017, will retire from UAB on Oct. 31. Many will be interim dean effective Nov. 1.

Established in 2012, the Montgomery Regional Campus was created to help stem a shortage of physicians in much-needed areas around the state and increase the ranks of primary care physicians in Alabama. The campus is now home to 20 third- and fourth-year medical students since opening its doors to students in May 2014. It also houses the Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency and Selma Family Medicine Residency programs.

“Dr. Many is true expert on medical education in Montgomery. Having him step back into this role as interim dean while we continue the search for a permanent dean is a tremendous asset to the program,” said Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine. “I also want to thank Dr. Heudebert for his service as interim regional dean over the last three years. His leadership has been commendable in this period of transition, and I appreciate all the contributions he’s made to the Montgomery campus, and the School of Medicine, during his long career at UAB.

A national search is underway to secure a new permanent dean to lead the Montgomery campus. Learn more about the search on the Senior Leader Search page on the School of Medicine website.
